Preparing for your new puppy

Getting your new puppy home is an an exciting time, but there are a few things that you, as a new puppy owner need to do to make yours and the puppies life better.

Your puppy will come to you with age appropriate shots. They will have been on a de-worming schedule. Vaccine and de-worming records will be provided to you to give to your Veterinarian.

  1. All Charleton Standards Standard Poodle puppies go home Doggie-Door trained. If you have a doggie door, in most cases you will have a puppy already house-trained depending on the door’s accessibility and you having made sure the puppy is well acclimated to its location and accessibility. It may take a little getting used to for them but they will quickly adapt.ou should still follow the instructions below and go out with your pup showing him/her the doggie door. Use whatever words that mean ‘let’s go potty outside’ so he/she continues to learn language. They know those words here. Remember consistency will pay off quickly 🙂 If you’re having a hard time with this I’m a phone call away. Relax and don’t wait to call just do it.
    • If you don’t have a doggie door, then there’s some adjustments for your puppy to learn. Here are some tips;
      • First, be very consistent and focused for just a few days and you will have house-training accomplished very quickly. If you’re too busy to really watch and focus on getting your puppy trained, then you will have more difficulty and it will take longer to house train your puppy.
      • Always take them to the same door and out to the same spot to potty. Taking them to the same spot will also set them up for only going there and not just anywhere outside which makes for a clean yard.
      • Always take them out first thing every morning (pick up their food and water every night by 7 PM until they are fully trained).
      • Take them out after every nap and at least every two hours, if possible.
      • Take your pup out after playing or in the middle of playing if it’s been 10 minutes as everything is moving inside your pup and they need to know when they feel that feeling it’s time for them to go outside to potty. Then you two can continue playing inside or out following the potty rules.
      • Be consistent and remember they are getting bigger every day and will be able to hold longer as they grow.
      • Your pup will be potty trained to sleep through the night with the exception of maybe the first couple nights getting use to their new home. By 7 weeks old I take them out at 11 pm and not again until 5:30-6:00am unless I hear them up. If you have to take them out but it’s ’sleeping time.’ DO NOT play with your pup at this time or you might not be able to go back to sleep. Do praise with a calm pet and then tell them it’s time to go to sleep/bed. Do give your pup a few moments after going pee just to make sure she/he is done.
  2. Some things that have worked is to put a string of bells on the door handle. Every time you take them out, ring the bells, they will learn to ring them with their paw when they need to go out, and say let’s go potty outside or whatever verbiage you use. Do talk as it’ll truly help them understand faster as well. Remember your pup is learning language and that’s why they are the smartest dogs. You can talk to them like a human and they’ll catch on faster than humans lol it’s so true
  3. Your new puppy will need their first rabies vaccine between five and six moths of age.
  4. You will need to have your new puppy neutered or spayed by six months.
  5. You should also plan to start your puppy on heart worm preventative by five months of age.
